**Steel Reinforcement Work**

This trade covers the cutting, bending, fixing and placing of steel reinforcement bars and mesh for reinforced concrete structures such as foundations, columns, beams, slabs and walls, so that the reinforcement is correctly positioned, securely tied and ready for concreting.

1. Read and interpret structural drawings, bar bending schedules and reinforcement details

2. Identify bar sizes, grades, shapes and quantities from the bar bending schedule

3. Measure, mark and cut reinforcement bars to the required lengths

4. Bend bars to the correct shape, angle and dimensions using bar bending machines and hand benders

5. Set out and place main bars, distribution bars, links and stirrups according to drawings

6. Fix and tie reinforcement using binding wire at the correct spacing and lap lengths

7. Position spacers, chairs and cover blocks to maintain the correct concrete cover

8. Fabricate and place reinforcement cages for columns, beams and footings

9. Lay and tie welded steel mesh for slabs and walls

10. Check the completed reinforcement for spacing, cover, laps and alignment before concreting

11. Complete the practical test within the given time following safe work practices
