**Welding**

This trade covers the joining of steel plates, sections and pipes by arc welding for structural, piping and fabrication work in the construction industry, including joint preparation, welding in different positions and inspection so that the welds are sound, correctly sized and free from defects.

1. Read and interpret welding drawings, welding symbols and joint details

2. Identify base materials, electrodes, filler wires and welding consumables for the job

3. Measure, mark and cut steel plates and sections to the required size

4. Prepare joint edges by grinding, bevelling and cleaning to the required angle and root gap

5. Set up and adjust welding machines for the correct current, voltage and polarity

6. Assemble and tack weld the workpiece in the correct alignment and position

7. Carry out shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and other arc welding processes on butt and fillet joints

8. Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions according to the test requirement

9. Clean the welds by removing slag and spatter and finish them neatly

10. Inspect welds visually for size, profile, undercut, porosity, cracks and other defects

11. Use welding equipment, protective clothing, helmets and ventilation safely

12. Complete the practical test within the given time following safe work practices
