**Thermal Insulation (Pipework)**

This trade covers the application of thermal insulation to chilled water, hot water, steam and refrigerant pipework and fittings in buildings, including cutting, fitting, sealing and cladding of insulation materials so that heat loss and condensation are prevented and the finish is neat and durable.

1. Read and interpret piping and insulation drawings, specifications and material schedules

2. Identify the correct insulation material, thickness and cladding for the pipe size and service

3. Measure pipe diameters, lengths, bends, tees and valves and mark out insulation sections

4. Cut and shape insulation materials such as fibreglass, rockwool, polyethylene foam and elastomeric foam

5. Fit insulation sections onto straight pipes, elbows, tees, flanges and valves without gaps

6. Seal joints and seams using adhesive, sealant and vapour barrier tape to prevent condensation

7. Apply cladding such as aluminium sheet, PVC or canvas over the insulation and fix it neatly

8. Form and fit covers for fittings, valves and pipe supports

9. Use hand tools such as knives, shears, scribers and rivet tools safely

10. Check the finished work for tight joints, smooth finish and correct vapour sealing

11. Complete the practical test within the given time following safe work practices
